Air Conditioning Maintenance Tips
Clear leaves, brush and dirt from inside your air conditioner's top grill
Trim nearby bushes and shrubs to allow at least two feet of clearance around the unit
Set the thermostat to cooling mode and run your air conditioner and few minutes to make sure it is working
Schedule your annual checkup of your air conditioning system
Replace your air conditioning filter at least once a month. A dirty filter will reduce the air flow and can waste energy
Energy Saving Tips
Reduce air leaks in your home by caulking, sealing and weather stripping around windows and doors.
Use exhaust fans to reduce moisture in the kitchen and bath. Be sure and turn them OFF when not needed.
Make sure your refrigerator's seal is air tight. You can test the seal by placing a dollar bill and closing the door. If you can pull out the bill you may need to adjust the seal.
Wash ONLY full loads in the washer and dishwasher.
Turn off lights you do not need to save energy and reduce heat.
If it is time to replace your air conditioner, choose an energy efficient model with two-stage cooling.
Prepare dinner on your outdoor grill to reduce heat in your kitchen.
Check ducts for air leaks, including holes and separated sections.
Mildew Prevention
Clear leaves, pine needles and other debris from gutters and downspouts to ensure proper drainage. Check to ensure they are stable so to prevent flying debris during storms.
Be sure the downspouts slope away from the house. They should carry water at LEAST 5 feet from your foundation.
Position lawn sprinklers so they do NOT spray your house.
Examine window and door seals and weather stripping. Reseal if needed.
Move furniture a few inches from inside of exterior walls to increase air circulation.
Check the windows for condensation and the walls for water stains. These are signs of too much humidity.
Keep your home's relative humidity 30 to 50 percent.
